Chimney Rebuilding & Masonry Repair
Neglect is one way that a chimney gets into a condition that requires partial or complete chimney rebuilding. But it’s not only neglect that leads to this situation. Many things can affect the soundness of a chimney structure, and the licensed experts at National Chimney Service are prepared to deal with every one of them.
What Causes Chimney Structural Damage?
As strong as chimney bricks and mortar are, some things are even stronger:
- Lightning strikes
- Pounding hail storms
- Fierce winds
- Season after season of extreme temperatures
- Earthquakes
- Rain and melting snow, when it seeps into masonry cracks and starts a cycle of decay
- Major house-settling
- Old age
We encourage homeowners throughout our service areas of Fairfield County CT and Morris County NJ to schedule annual chimney inspections and chimney sweep services and to take care of repairs as soon as they’re needed. But even with the best maintenance program, problems can happen.
When they do, we know how to resolve them.
Is Complete Chimney Rebuilding Necessary?
This is a very important question to ask, because some so-called “chimney repair” companies will tell you that, yes, you have to rebuild your entire chimney, when this is not always the case.
The National Chimney Service team has a variety of methods for restoring integrity to a chimney without a full rebuild. Partial chimney rebuilding can include:
Tuckpointing
A process that scrapes out old, decayed mortar and replaces it with a fresh new compound that will hold up and serve you well for many years.
Brick replacement
The majority of bricks in a chimney structure are rarely broken. Often, only some of the bricks are damaged. We can safely remove compromised bricks and replace them with new, sturdy bricks.
Additionally, for small surface cracks, we can apply a water sealant to keep water from seeping into the open spaces and causing major damage.
When Chimney Rebuilding Is Needed
Following a thorough chimney inspection, we’ll be able to advise you on the best way to address a damaged chimney structure.
If chimney damage is widespread throughout the entire chimney stack (the part above the roof), we can do a rebuild of just the stack, restoring strength and operational soundness.
If we find structural damage below the roofline, we can rebuild parts or all of the chimney breast.
Unlike with some “fly-by-night” chimney workers, we will never suggest any kind of repair or rebuilding work if we aren’t 100% certain that it’s necessary.
We won’t overcharge you or add on a bunch of “unexpected” services that you don’t understand in the first place.
When we rebuild a chimney, it’s done correctly and in compliance with any local building and safety codes. We stand behind our workmanship, materials, and service with every single job and every single customer
