Keys to Preventing Chimney Fires
A chimney fire can be devastating, not only to your chimney but also to your home and family. Chimney fires come in all sizes, from huge to undetected. But all of them can be destructive.
Fortunately, there’s a lot you can do to prevent this kind of fire. National Chimney Cleaners of Fairfield County, CT, and Morris County, NJ, would like to share four tips on how to reduce the likelihood of experiencing a chimney fire.
Creosote is the cause
Most chimney fires start with creosote igniting in the flue. Creosote is a byproduct of smoke condensation and can’t be avoided if you have a wood-burning fireplace.
The idea, then, is to reduce the amount of creosote you’re producing. Here are four ways to do it:
1. Provide plenty of air for your fire
Air helps a wood fire burn efficiently and completely. Inefficient and incomplete burns make smoke, which makes creosote. If your house is too airtight, crack a window near the fireplace to bring in more air. Shut off bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans. Make sure your damper is open and the chimney flue is clean.
2. Burn dry, hard wood
Damp wood produces a lot of smoke. Dry wood is a better choice. Hardwoods are less smoky than softwoods.
3. Don’t burn non-firewood products
This means no cardboard, plastics, metals, furniture, clothing or anything else. These and other non-firewood products are very smoky. Some of them can also be full of dangerous toxins.
4. Watch the temperature
A probe thermometer will tell you how hot your flue is during a fire. Aim for 600 to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit for optimal burning with less smoke.
How to spot a chimney fire
Most chimney fires give clues. Watch for:
- A rumbling sound like from a distant train
- Weird tapping or clicking noises
- Excess dense smoke coming from the fireplace or the top of the chimney outside
If you notice any of these clues, get everyone out of the house and call 911. Afterward, schedule a chimney inspection before using your fireplace again – regardless of the size or impact of the fire.
The inspection will likely turn up several things, including:
- Warping in the chimney cap or flue cover
- Chimney liner damage
- Smoke stains on the masonry at the top of the chimney
- Cracked masonry bricks
- Puffy creosote inside the chimney flue
Professional chimney technicians can resolve all these problems.
How to keep your chimney safe
In addition to the four smoke-reduction tips above, the very best things you can do to prevent chimney fires are:
1. Schedule annual chimney inspections
2. Have your chimney professionally swept once a year
Reducing smoke and keeping your chimney clean and in good repair will allow you to dramatically reduce the chance of a chimney fire occurring.
